Tom Callahan’s Biography

I began practicing law in 1984, after graduating from Albany Law School. Prior to that, I graduated from Boston University in 1980, with a BA in political science. In between my attendance at the two, I spent one year working in the business world. I worked my way through both schools, the highlight being my work on the staff of Assemblyman Lawrence Bennett in the NYS Legislature during law school.

My career has provided a number of interesting opportunities to practice in various locations. As a consequence, I am admitted to practice in three states’ courts and in numerous Federal courts, and I have appeared in many other courts on pro hac vice (one-time) basis. In 2008, I was honored to become a member of the bar of the US Supreme Court.

My career began at a small, general practice firm in Hingham, MA in 1984, handling real estate and general civil matters. I then moved to the corporate/real estate department of a small firm located in Providence and Boston, but still involved in civil litigation as well. When that firm split in 1990, I began work with the Boston/East Brunswick, NJ firm of Tucker, Biegel & Speziali, where I served as an assistant regional manager for a Fortune 500 corporation involved in the nationwide asbestos litigation, practicing across New England, New York and New Jersey. In that practice, I was involved in the day-to-day management of hundreds of cases, multiple trials and outside counsel across the Northeast.

I began my own practice in 1994, fulfilling a strong wish to be in my own practice, and have maintained that practice, solo or with others, until the present time. The workload percentages may shift from time to time, but my practice has given me both extensive litigation and transactional experience in the areas of general civil litigation, domestic relations law, real estate law and permitting, business law and counseling, municipal law and estate planning. I am also a trained mediator. During my early solo years, I also was counsel to a health care subrogation recovery firm, practicing across the country and providing services both as a lawyer and in marketing/client growth.

I have also had the rewarding opportunity to serve my community, the Town of Cohasset, in a variety of capacities over the years, experience that has also helped build my practice skills. I was a two-term elected member (one year as chair) of the Board of Selectmen, a 9-yr. member (two years as chair) of the Conservation Commission, where I helped draft the first two versions of the town’s (then-new) local wetlands regulations, the Growth & Development (Master Plan) Committee, the (then-new) Community Preservation Committee, and the (then-new) Housing Partnership. I currently serve on the Open Space & Recreation Committee, and have been involved on three occasions with citizen groups promoting bylaw changes at Town Meeting, authoring the various warrant articles. I have also been a past instructor at Massasoit Community College in business law and state & local government, and with the Plymouth/South Shore Board of Realtors on septic system regulations.

For 6 years, I was a volunteer adult leader with the Cohasset Appalachia Service Project, bringing teens to work on house repair projects in the coal country of West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky. I was proudly born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, spent my high school years in Coral Springs, FL, and have resided and raised my family in Cohasset for over 30 years. I enjoy sailing, DIY projects and politics, and am the proud father of two adult children.
